In un intervista
rilasciata ad MTV Italia in occasione del suo primo
concerto italiano come solista, Billy fa chiarezza sulla
situazione creatasi all'interno degli Zwan e sugli episodi
che hanno portato alla rottura.
Che cosa è successo agli Zwan?
Che è successo con gli Zwan? Quello che
mi chiedo più spesso io è, ‘Cosa
non è successo con gli Zwan’? È
stato un incubo rock’n’roll concentrato
in circa sei mesi.
Ci interessava sapere come mai, dopo averlo
caricato di tantissime aspettative, il gruppo sia durato
così poco…
La cosa interessante degli Zwan
è che sono nati da un gruppo di amici che suonavano
assieme. Abbiamo fatto alcuni concerti ed erano andati
bene, abbiamo pensato di fare anche un disco. Sono successe
diverse cosa da quando il gruppo è stato formato,
era stato Matt (Sweeney – NDR) a mettere insieme
in gruppo e ci conoscevamo da molto tempo e poi c’era
anche Jimmy (Chamberlin – NDR) che aveva fatto
parte dei Pumpkins. Abbiamo avuto fiducia in Matt, ma
le altre persone che ha portato nel gruppo erano molto
vicine alla sua idea di band. Non sapevamo che c’erano
di mezzo storie di droga e altre storie losche. Pensavamo
di dover suonare con un certo tipo di persone, ma più
passava il tempo più cresceva la pressione: abbiamo
scoperto che le persone con cui avremmo dovuto suonare
non erano quelle che avevamo in mente. È stato
un po’ come pensare di iniziare una relazione
con una persona e credere di essere l’unico per
poi scoprire alla fine che questa persona ha 45 partner!
Quello che era legato alla credibilità della
relazione è stato messo in discussione. Quando
l’uso di droghe è diventato eccessivo per
me e Jimmy è stato un incubo, poi c’erano
due del gruppo per i quali certe storie di sesso erano
più importanti dello stesso gruppo, anche se
sapevano benissimo che questo avrebbe rovinato l’armonia.
C’era uno che se la faceva con la fidanzata del
produttore mentre stavamo facendo il disco e gente dalla
mentalità hippy a cui non fregava niente dei
soldi, ma che ne spendevano un sacco ogni sera facendo
sì che sparissero chissà dove. Per questo
dicevo che si è trasformato in un incubo rock’n’roll
e io mi sono ritrovato a far parte di un gruppo che
era molto peggio di quello che avevo prima. Le persone
non erano leali al concetto stesso di musica che proponevamo.
Ho iniziato a pensare che si trattasse di una specie
di scherzo, quindi ho capito che non sarei stato in
grado di salire sul palco fingendo che mi importasse
qualcosa di essere lì: ormai non mi importava
più nulla. È stato un po’ imbarazzante
perché è un progetto su cui avevo investito
molto, ma ci sono cose che la gente non sa, anche sulla
realizzazione del disco che ha portato alla luce una
serie di problematiche. Non ho detto tutta la verità
per coprire gli altri membri del gruppo, e tutto si
è riversato su di me alla fine.
Sei rimasto deluso da questa esperienza?
Ero deluso di me stesso perché
avevo pensato di riuscire ad avere un altro gruppo,
migliore e più dolce di quello che erano stati
i Pumpkins. Anche se gli Smashing Pumpkins hanno avuto
diversi problemi, il cuore interno del gruppo era molto
dolce e tenevamo molto a ciò che stavamo facendo.
Volevamo venir fuori dai nostri problemi e superarli,
questo ci portava a creare dell’ottima musica.
Far parte di un altro gruppo mi faceva sentire come
un maiale zoppo. Mi ritengo una persona con un po’
di morale e ciò che succedeva negli Zwan era
difficile da vivere: il fatto che il mio nome e i miei
soldi venissero usati in mia assenza per un’esistenza
dissoluta e rock’n’roll!

31 Marzo 2004 ::
A distanza di mesi dallo scioglimento degli Zwan e
dopo le dichiarazioni di Billy Corgan che lasciavano
intendere di qualche screzio tra i componenti della
band, David Pajo ha deciso di uscire
allo scoperto e rispondere in maniera diretta ad alcune
delle accuse che si è sentito rivolgere negli
ultimi tempi. David lo fa attraverso la message board
del suo
sito ufficiale con un lungo messaggio in cui accusa
Billy di voler scaricare le colpe del fallimento della
band interamente addosso a lui, di avercela con gli
asiatici e di aver intascato milioni di dollari senza
dare la giusta parte al resto della band cercando inoltre
di passare come vittima dei suoi compagni di avventura:
hey I'm actually glad this was brought up
I've definitely taken the high road in regard to the
zwan issue, because, even though I don't approve of
the way things were handled, I've tried to be democratic
and approach z*** from someone who loves instead of
someone who hates. and I'd like to believe that the
joy we had in the beginning was real and not a manipulation
by someone who wanted to cash in on the pumpkins.
but billy is spreading BLATANT UNTRUTHS about me, about
paz, and about matt... I would love to tell the world
the truth about what happened, about what really killed
z***, about MORALITY. but I don't want to start a war,
I want to forgive and forget.
mostly forget.
I never cared before, I'm more than happy to take the
blame for being the "cancer" in zwan, even
though its completely untrue. I just know that billy
has to blame someone and I have nothing to lose, go
ahead and dump it all on me.
I'd just like to put it behind me, so yeah... blame
the asians (he thinks we're all sneaky anway, go figure).
blame james for destroying the pumpkins, blame me for
destroying zwan. who cares?
but this is just getting ridiculous... I mean, if I'm
going to take all the blame, why don't I take all the
credit (and all the money) too?
it's obvious, I can't take the credit, I can't take
the money, I can't take the blame. and anyone with half
a brain can see it too.
I mean, I didn't make a dime from zwan. I made enough
to stay broke. someone in the band walked away with
millions and it wasn't me, it wasn't paz, and it wasn't
matt...
of all the people in the band, I stayed the most in
the background and did my best not to rock the boat,
I had the least amount of involvement. it just makes
me an easy target if you need someone to blame. so draw
your arrows, do your worst.
I'm not going to tell the world the truth, because its
reactionary. but I'd like to write it down, for myself,
and maybe the world will see it in thirty years or something...
because billy's trying to re-write history, and I'd
like to put it down THE WAY IT REALLY WENT DOWN. not
the way he twists it so that he comes out the innocent
victim of our outrageous, shrewd personalities!
honestly, anyone that knows me KNOWS I'm just a geek
that can barely find a pair of socks that match, and
that my ambitions have nothing to do with bringing anyone
down in any way at all. I couldn't be shrewd if I tried,
because I don't look that far ahead, and honestly I
just don't care enough!!!
I was there, as an observer, unjudgemental. any injustices
I felt I kept to myself or only shared with close friends.
but all this character assassination he's doing is pure
vanity... and I refuse to resort to that level.
anyhoo
I apologize for this rant, I just had to vent. one of
these days the record will be set straight, but I don't
want to be the one to do it.
carry on, people!
there's so much great music ahead, from billy, from
jimmy, from matt, from paz, from all of us... I don't
want one person's demons to change your appreciation
of any of it.

Rockstar.it riporta maggiori dettagli sulla decisione
di sciogliere gli Zwan da parte di Billy Corgan:
"Ho ricevuto un fax dagli altri ragazzi della
band dicendomi che le cose non stavano funzionando"
ha spiegato l'ex-Smashing Pumpkins e adesso anche ex-Zwan
"E' stato tutto molto strano. All'inizio credevo
di essere finito in uno di quei programmi televisivi
tipo candid camera; poi, dopo aver urlato per 40 minuto
'Ci sono cascato!', sono salito sulla mia macchina e
ho raggiunto i ragazzi dicendogli 'Hey, cosa sta succedendo?
E' per questo che non rispondevate alle mie telefonate?'.
A questo punto credo che sia la cosa migliore, se non
la sentivamo nostra al 100% abbiamo fatto bene a finire
qui questa esperienza. Spero che la nostra amicizia
non si sia intaccata".
In un'intervista alla Fox dei giorni scorsi, Billy
ha anche chiarito che non c'è rancore tra gli
altri membri della band, che le cose non stavano effettivamente
andando per il verso giusto e che è sua ferma
intenzione lanciarsi nella carriera solista (sta già
scrivendo alcune nuove canzoni, tra cui alcune dedicate
alla sua città natale, Chicago)
Intanto ieri sera, all' Art Institute of Chicago, si
è tenuto il suo primo poetry reading (v.
foto). Sembra certa, per il prossimo
anno, la pubblicazione di un libro di scritti di cui
possiamo già leggere in antemprima una poesia:

L'NME
riporta una dichiarazione di Billy Corgan, rilasciata
alla radio WGN-Ch 9, in cui sancisce la fine degli Zwan:
"zwan broke up. a couple people asked me, 'why
didn't you tell anybody', and im just done with that
part of my life of trying to run around and generate
news.
someone asks why they broke up
BILLY: there isn't enough time here to tell you the
whole story. its the same thing that you see on 'behind
the music' a thousand time- sex, drugs and rock and
roll, and im not having any sex or doing any drugs so
you figure it out.
any plans to put together another band
or is it to early?
BILLY: my heart was really in the smashing pumpkins
and when that ended i think it was naive of me to think
that i could form something that would mean that much
to me. i really enjoyed my time in zwan but at the end
of the day without that deep sense of family and loyalty
it just becomes like anything else. in some cases i
felt that the band members viewed it as something they
could decide to do or not to do. and out attitude in
the smashing pumpkins was a do or die proposition and
that got us through all the bad time that we went through,
particularly with the pumpkins where you had two band
members with serious drug problems. and without that
sense of family rock and roll is certainly not worth
the trouble. so umm, im ready now... im 36 years old
and ready for a solo career."
"Penso che il mio cuore fosse rimasto negli Smashing
Pumpkins ed è stato ingenuo, da parte mia, pensare
che sarei riuscito a trovare un'altra cosa che potesse
essere così importante per me. L'esperienza con
gli Zwan mi è piaciuta, ma alla fine dei conti,
senza quel senso di famiglia e di fedeltà, è
una cosa che diventa simile ad un'altra.....[cut]....ho
36 anni e sono pronto per una carriera solista"
Secondo Q101,
la celebre emittente radiofonica di Chicago, il bassista
degli Urge Overkill, Eddie Roeser, ha preso il posto
di Paz Lenchatin negli Zwan. Ancora nessuna conferma
ufficiale, ma la fonte da cui la radio ha avuto la notizia,
sembra attendibile.

18 Agosto 2003 ::
Continuano a circolare nuovi dettagli relativi all'attuale
status degli Zwan.
David Pajo sembra essere ancora parte integrante della
band stando a quanto afferma Billboard: Pajo tells Billboard.com his status in Zwan is unchanged
but that the group is presently taking a break. Mentre Paz pare essere stata scaricata dalla band:
Jimmy Chamberlin durante il Drum
Clinic Tour, alla domanda di un fan riguardante
l'uscita di Paz dagli Zwan ha risposto dicendo che non
è stata una sua scelta quella di andarsene, ma
le è stato esplicitamente richiesto: "uhh, she didnt quit...we asked her to leave,
going on, she just did not cut it for us."
Intanto Billy si dedica alla poesia e alla scrittura:
il prossimo 17 Settembre, sarà al Art Institute
of Chicago per un reading di poesia (info).
Sembra anche che sia impegnato nella stesura di un libro.

06 Agosto 2003 ::
Sembra che Paz abbia definitivamente abbandonato gli
Zwan.
Ecco il testo di una mail inviata ad una fan e postata
sul sito a lei dedicato
"I want to let you know that I am no longer
with Zwan. My experience with Zwan has
been great but it is time for me to move on to new projects.
This Fall I will be dedicating my time with David Pajo
as Papa M.
I am currently rehearsing for our up coming shows in
October. .
We also hope to start recording shortly after that."
A questo punto è incerta anche la posizione di
David Pajo all'interno della band e pare sempre più
lontana la possibilità che il secondo album veda
la luce entro la fine dell'anno come inizialmente previsto.
Gli Zwan, stando alle dichiarazioni di Billy rilasciate
prima dell'annullamento della tournee europea, avrebbero
dovuto iniziare la lavorazione del prossimo album proprio
in autunno, ma la dichiarazione di Paz lascia intendere
che David Pajo sarà impegnato in una mini tournee
e nella registrazione del materiale per questo loro
progetto insieme proprio durante l'autunno.
Ancora nessuna notizia "ufficiale" si è
avuta dal resto della band.

22 Luglio 2003 ::
Nuovi dettagli emergono riguardo alla vicenda di un
presunto abbandono della band da parte di Paz Lenchantin.
"As of right now. I am moving forward with new projects
that are exciting to me. Zwan is taking a little break
right now."
Questo il testo di una e-mail inviata da Paz ad una
fan (www.simplypaz.com).
Pare dunque che la bassista si sia presa una pausa dalla
band per dedicarsi ad altre, più stimolanti,
attività.
Dalle parole della sorella Ana postate sulla message
board dello stesso sito almeno un mese fa, sembrerebbe
che all'origine dell'annullamento del tour europeo ci
sia stata una crisi di Paz, incapace di sostenere i
duri ritmi della vita on the road.

21 Luglio 2003 ::
Secondo la rivista Rocksound (v. art),
Paz Lenchantin avrebbe lasciato gli Zwan.
A confermare la notizia, una dichiarazione di Billy
Howerdel, chitarrista degli A Perfect Circle ed amico
della bassista.
"Le ho parlato qualche giorno fa, e pare che
sia uscita dal gruppo."
Sempre secondo Howerdel, Paz avrebbe in cantiere un
nuovo progetto musicale insieme a David Pajo.
E' dall'ultimo comunicato stampa che annunciava la cancellazione
del tour europeo che della band non si hanno notizie
"certe".
A questo punto non ci resta che aspettare dichiarazioni
ufficiali sul destino (incerto) della band.

15 Luglio 2003 ::
Ulteriori dettagli relativi al prossimo lavoro degli
Zwan, emergono da un'intervista, risalente alle prime
date del tour europeo (poi annullato per motivi familiari),
recentemente pubblicata sul sito olandese
Kindamuzik.
Jimmy precisa che il prossimo lavoro targato Djali Zwan
non sarà un cd audio ma un DVD che racconterà,
fotogramma per fotogramma, le sessions di registrazione
del nuovo materiale (già Billy ne aveva parlato
in un'intervista al Rolling Stone - v. news).
Il sound sarà prevalentemente acustico e, stando
alle parole di Jimmy, David Pajo avrà un ruolo
chiave nella realizzazione del materiale visti gli ottimi
risultati raggiunti con la sua attività solista
(Papa
M): "Ci affideremo al lavoro di Pajo per il prossimo
album. David canterà in molte canzoni: vogliamo
che abbia un ruolo primario." Jimmy spiega anche la scelta di creare due entità
per un unico gruppo:
"Usare più nomi ci permette di esplorare
diversi territori musicali senza per questo cedere alle
aspettative che nascono dopo che la band si è
fatta un nome: chi comprerà un biglietto per
il concerto degli Djali Zwan saprà da subito
che non faremo pezzi come per esempio Lyric."
Pare dunque che ci siano tutte le promesse per aspettarsi
un lavoro totalmente diverso da Mary Star Of The Sea...a
questo punto non ci rimane altro che attendere per ascoltare
ciò che gli Djali Zwan sapranno fare. I lavori
in studio avrebbero dovuto iniziare nelle prime settimane
di Settembre ma l'annullamento del tour potrebbe averli
anticipati.

In un'intervista rilasciata in occasione del Rock Am
Ring lo scorso 6 Giugno, Billy Corgan ha dichiarato
che il prossimo singolo tratto da "Mary Star Of
The Sea", sarà "Of A Broken Heart".
Nella stessa occasione, Billy ha confermato che
la band ritornerà negli studi di registrazione
in autunno, per portare a termine l'album degli Djali
Zwan.
Per quanto riguarda la questione del tour europeo annullato,
a parte il comunicato ufficiale, non si hanno ulteriori
dettagli nè da parte della band, nè da
parte del management.

La D’Alessandro e Galli è spiacente
di comunicare che, a causa di gravi problemi familiari
gli ZWAN hanno cancellato tutte le date del tour europeo
iniziato il 29 maggio in Francia.

disponibile da parte del management del gruppo).
Per questo motivo ci scusiamo con gli spettatori
ed informiamo i possessori dei biglietti che potranno
essere rimborsati presso le prevendite d’acquisto.
Il rimborso verrà effettuato dalla prossima settimana
entro il 28 giugno, per le date di Napoli e Roma, mentre
per Fano e Lucca il termine è il 30 luglio.

La notizia è stata riportata anche da un moderatore
nella Z
Board.
Ancora non si hanno conferme "ufficiali" e
dettagli sul rimborso dei biglietti, ma attendiamo informazioni
in proposito.
Pare che la band abbia deciso di annullare la tournee
europea dopo il concerto di Lione di ieri sera e questo
per una serie di motivi imputabili principalmente ad
errori nella gestione e pianificazione delle date:
- troppi concerti nello stesso paese, con il risultato
di scarse vendite per ogni singola data.
- carenza di promozione
- costo dei biglietti troppo alto, considerato quello
dei festivals a cui avrebbero partecipato
- inserimento nel cartellone di alcuni festival tra
gruppi (v. Iron Maiden) troppo diversi
